About “Tutor Me”

What is “Tutor Me”?

“Tutor Me” is a mobile learning (mLearning) module that is designed and developed to complement the process of teaching and learning English for Academic Survival course (UHB 10302) at Universiti Tun Hussein Onn Malaysia (UTHM), Johor. It comprises content that can be used during tutorial sessions and Independent Study hours. This module enables the course instructor to develop and convey course content, monitor the student’ participation in activities highlighted in the module, as well as assess the students’ performance. “Tutor Me” also equip the students with the access to employ a number of interactive features, for instance, discussion forums, video conferencing, and threaded exchange of views. In addition, this module provides assistance in the process of administration, documentation, tracking, and reporting of the course throughout the semester(s).

What are the features of “Tutor Me”?

Consolidated Learning
The students who are using “Tutor Me” are able to access the content regardless of time and location with an Internet connection. As the users of this platform can see the same learning material in the same manner, this module ensures steadiness in content delivery and assessment.  The content of the module can also be easily updated by the instructor so that the students will get the latest information in regards to the course.

Reporting and Tracking Students’ Performance 
“Tutor Me” permits the students to view the learning path needed, track their progress as compared to the required learning path and assess records of achievements.  The instructor of Academic English can access the same records of achievements and analyze the data to identify areas for needed improvement and of success. At the same time, learning strategies can be also be easily organized based on the student’s special learning requirements. In the areas in which the students consider challenging, he or she can give more efforts. This is due to the fact that “Tutor Me” provides the student with the capability to handle the learning pace in a skillful manner.

Prompt Evaluation
“Tutor Me” permits the students to be assessed prior to taking English for Academic Survival (UHB 10302) course, while participating in the course, and upon the completion of English for Academic Survival (UHB 10302) course. The instructor can also evaluate the students’ level of comprehension by organizing a scheduled assessment through “Tutor Me” in a certain period of time. The instructor can analyze the records of the students’ results in order to identify the success levels and actual time spent to complete each component.

Uncomplicated Upgradation of Content
“Tutor Me” gives a focal point for the instructor to make any changes needed. It also permits the instructor to revise its content and assessments online and assess knowledge levels and abilities.

Simplifies Learning Processes
“Tutor Me” is user-friendly mobile learning platform. It comprises a wide-range of features, such as documentation, administration and classroom learning.  This module delivers an integrated and enriching learning experience for the students of Academic English (UWB 10102) course.

Who is the developer?

The developer of “Tutor Me” is a lecturer from Department of English Language and Linguistics (DELL), Centre for Language Studies, UTHM. Her highest qualification is Masters of Education (Teaching English as a Second Language from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor. She has 12 years of experience in teaching English at higher learning institutions. In mLearning, she believes in the words of Seymour Papert – “You can’t teach people everything they need to know. The best you can do is position them where they can find what they need to know when they need to know it.”
